Thomas Vonk


Bachelor’s degree in Egyptology, Classical Archaeology and Celtic Studies in 2013 and Master’s degree in Anthropology of the Americas from the University of Bonn in 2017. Master’s thesis on the subject of Nahuatl writing in the Codex Telleriano-Remensis. Doctoral candidate since April 2018 in Anthropology of the Americas with the dissertation topic „The Writing Systems of Oaxaca and the Central Mexican Highlands (500 BCE–1519 CE)“ funded by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts as part of the Academy project „Text Database and Dictionary of Classic Mayan“.

Areas of Interest

Graphic sign systems in general and writing systems in particular, their decipherment and decipherability. Theoretical description and model-building of their mechanics and transformation (through inner mutation or contact-induced), also as a manifestation of universal interhuman/transcultural interaction processes, based on general semiotic premises.
